I want to post some Christmas shots, but first here are a couple of drawings Eva did over breakfast this morning, I think they are fantastic, but then I would wouldn't I?
The first is a man - check out his eyebrows and apparently he's tired, that's why he has lots of circles for his eyes…Unfortunately she drew it on our phone bill so I had to annotate it slightly so the whole wide world can't see our details. Some crazy person might try and pay our phone bill or something!

These are very bad photos and it's embarrassing to use them. But hey if I didn't, I wouldn't have a record of Eva's awesome 'Zingo' game - a birthday present from her friend Ava which is much loved and often played - and of Eva dressed up after some belated Deepavali celebrations. She looked very cute. She is very, very happy playing Zingo and so far will do so for hours if her opponent is agreeable...

I gave Eva a torch for her birthday - when we were staying on Bintan she used one for the first time and it was magical to watch. When we got home from our day at the reservoir yesterday, we walked to the local store and bought batteries, then waited for it to get dark and Eva tested it out.

She had all these strange rules - to turn the torch on you have to bend your knees a certain way…the user of the torch has to have a paper cup down their top and wear this special hat…they have to have this special napkin sticking out like this…

I was disqualified from using the torch a number of times due to gross infringement on the rules of torch usage.

Upper Seletar Reservoir

Yesterday was a public holiday in Singapore and Eva and I spent the day at Seletar Reservoir - which was deserted, windswept and gorgeous all morning. We went for a huge walk, stopped and drew pictures, ate snacks…Eva tried her hand at photography (see her first efforts below!), we watched some guys fishing and we examined all sorts of things. It was very peaceful and empty and it was wonderful to have the place to ourselves - especially after all the crazy runs to densely populated shopping malls to organise eva's birthday. Times like this are definitely few and far between for us in Singapore and I would love to seek out more of them.

Later in the day as the sun came out and the weather heated up, we moved over to relax under some trees and eat some lunch. Eva began to organise me to 'make a house' and help weave an elaborate story involving bears and elephants trying to come into our house. Her Daddy turned up later and joined in.

Yesterday and today were the first times I had the privilege of dropping Eva off at school. She was so content and happy on the drive and very proud to show me around her classroom. I got a perfunctory kiss but the whole event was much briefer than I had imagined. It was clear that I was free to go after about…3 seconds.

I definitely got the impression from Fifie, her (awesome) teacher, that she is a very prominent member of the class, particularly at snack time…

After a lovely morning in the surf and sand, we retreated inside for the heat of the afternoon. Eva's latest craze is cutting and gluing. We carry a bag/box/container of her 'papers' and a pair of scissors wherever we go…and she also needs markers, her special star stamp and stickers. She then makes drawings on the little scraps of papers and sticks stickers on top..and glues the papers onto something. Here's this afternoon's projects: decorating her paper storage jar and making a special card.

These drawers were bought from the 'as is' section of Ikea ages ago. I kept meaning to do something with them… So here's our efforts since the holidays have begun. We do a drawer front a day, chatting about what would look good and what we could use. It's lovely and absorbing and Eva is very capable of doing the majority herself - her gluing skills are most excellent I must say :)

It's true the thing is going to look very schizophrenic when we've finished. But there's nothing wrong with a bit of crazy.

I didn't take many photos because I was too busy chasing my crazy daughter around. A great picnic at Marina Barrage with Eva's preschool.

Before this there was some hilarious kite-flying…try to picture Eva and I running madly around a field, completely out of sync, with Eva veering off without me; each of us taking turns to fling the dam kite into the wind. Needless to say the kite didn't get airborne. The good news was the other Mums and Dads were doing the same thing and no-one else's made it up.

We had a gorgeous few hours at the school pool today. At one point I floated around on a rubber mat while eva sat happily in the shallows filling and emptying the 64 containers she'd insisted on bringing. She also spent a good hour narrating her own cooking show in this well-pitched imitated tone, using phrases like "next we'll just thrown in a pinch of this and mix it very quickly" and "right, if you just look here, you can see it's working nicely."

The Flood

Eva didn't actually have much to say about this, strangely enough. I think it was just all too surprising and odd. One minute water was seeping under the door -literally, I saw it starting to come through- and within 2 minutes tops, it was like this. Ten minutes later it was getting pretty deep and everyone had made a dash for it - apart from us as I was stuck with the stroller and Eva and I couldn't carry both and wade very well.

Then we came around the corner and I realised it was streaming down the escalators to the floors below. We were parked in the lowest car park, where it all eventually ended up.

Eva was very excited by the fire engine and policemen and torches and darkness - when we eventually descended into the car park it was very very dark and twee were led by civil defence, who then guided us how to drive out of the building. Eva couldn't believe it she was amazed by it all and quite speechless!

The Skyride

Eva just made the minimum height for this - it's 85cm and she's about 90cm…but she still seems pretty small to take on with no seatbelt or anything. I must admit I was kinda freaking out for a huge portion of the ride. I was holding her hand very tightly. At one point it stopped and we were just dangling there for about a minute. I thought I was going to faint. Eva loved it though, had a lot to talk about afterwards and cant wait to take her cousin to show her.

Oh my god even watching the video makes my palms sweat. I love it at the end when she says 'you can see for miles up here'…I suspect it's from a Kipper episode…very cute

The Air Show

Helicopters are a REALLY GIG deal to Eva - the poor young air force recruit put in charge of this red line had a very hard time keeping Eva from crossing it.

...last weekend, which took about two hours to get to due to traffic and lack of any parks and crowds and security checks and heat. And which, after ten minutes, Eva decided she would like to leave and she didn't like it at all. And which, on the way out, Eva decided she wanted to go back and it was a form of abuse her mother was subjecting her to if she was to try and continue to leave and she should scream as loudly and as much as possible. These photos were a break in proceedings on the way out of the military airport.

Incidentally the actual air show was amazing - I have never seen how steeply jets ascend into the heavens or how fast they go. They looked very cool. Eva's questions were a bit daunting - how do I explain what a tank or a bomb or a huge gun is for?

It is, for the record, impossible for one person to get a decent photo of an excited 2 year old on Sentosa. The ones included are for recording purposes but have little or no artistic value.
We had a lovely afternoon today. Eva and I went to Sentosa (courageous huh?) and everything went in our favour. We found the perfect, closest-possible, shady car park - twice! Everyone we bought tickets off was lovely and friendly and charmed by Eva (who even managed a spontaneous terima kasih to a delighted Malay woman); there seemed to be a lull in customers just as we approached every place we wanted to go; Eva was relaxed and cheerful and didn't complain once; I forgot to bring any spare nappies or wipes but we didn't need any…and even other things I can't recall. At one point I asked Eva if she wanted her lollipop that we had packed for our special day and she said 'No I'll save it for up in the tower.' ??? Never happens.

I really had my doubts about going but decided we would just try Underwater World. Even though it was crowded, kinda smelly, old and extremely loud, the sea stuff was very, very cool and Eva just loved it. So then we thought we'd try the Sky Tower…also fun...then Butterfly Park...then a dance in the jungle (they play music through speakers on the walkways)...then a chat with the snake man…and finally home. Perfect!

I would have been in heaven if these crazy ball pits had existed when I was a kid. Very surreal…The indoor playground that goes with it is hellish, in my opinion. Crowded, crazy and over the top. But Eva was completely hysterical with excitement and ran from the big psychedelic one to the younger coloured-ball one, about 20 or 30 times. She will sleep very well tonight :)

It is of course, impossible for me (with my non-existent photography skills and super-hyper daughter) to get a decent photo. But you can at least see the crazy ball pit.

There is a photo on a post many moons ago, of Eva and Nikita trying to see over the wall into this same ball pit - they were just standing...
